TMJ Treatment in Kampala Uganda

TMJ describes a group of painful disorders characterized by dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint or the surrounding muscles. Sometimes, it is difficult to determine the cause of these symptoms, but fortunately, most cases of TMJ resolve themselves with at-home remedies.

Genetics, age, and gender tend to influence TMJ. Women appear to be more prone to developing the disorder. Both psychological and physical stress can also affect the onset of TMJ. For some patients, jaw pain stems from a medical condition, like bruxism or fibromyalgia.

Signs and Symptoms of TMJ Disorder

  • Clicking or Popping Sounds:Patients with TMJ often hear a grating, clicking or popping noise when opening and closing their mouths. Typically, this is caused by the disk shifting within the jaw joint. If the noise is accompanied by lockjaw or pain, you may have need TMJ treatment.
  • Pain in Facial Muscles:The pain is usually felt in the temples and cheeks. If you experience stiffness or soreness upon awakening, this may be due to overnight teeth grinding or clenching in your sleep. If you have developed this bad oral habit, a custom-fitted night guard may help relieve the pressure and relax your joints.
  • Joint Pain:Pain that emanates for the jaw joints are often described as TMJ arthritis. X-ray images can have shown that some patients have severe symptoms, but their TMJ appears normal while others experience no pain or dysfunction, but have advanced arthritis in the jaw joints. Arthritis is an incurable condition, but sometimes medication can help alleviate symptoms.

After a thorough exam, your dentist will develop a treatment plan to help manage your symptoms. A diet of soft foods may help reduce the stress on the jaw joints and muscles. Moist heat and ice alleviate inflammations and pain. Stretching exercises help with muscle spasms. Muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatories (non-steroidal) can also be effective at providing TMJ symptom relief.
